Science Club

Introduction-

Science club offers students the opportunity to engage in science-related activities that extend and enhance the science they experience in the classroom. Science Club is actively functioning in our college with a view to encourage group activities of students and to keep the students in touch with the recent advancements in science. The purpose of the Science Club is

 (1) To promote an interest in the sciences,

(2) To experience the sciences above and beyond the classroom setting,

 (3) To provide career information, and

 (4) To encourage, motivate and equip the students in scientific applications

and its interface with society .

(5) To encourage the students for participation

(6)To inculcate scientific aptitude in students. All students and faculty members belonging to the science stream are members of the science club. Every year , a meeting of the club is convened to discuss the proposed activities for that academic year. Invited lectures from eminent personalities, science exhibitions and competitions for students are conducted as Science club activities.

SCIENCE CLUB  ACTIVITY REPORT :2024-2024.This year the science club organised a talk on ‘Plastics:Management and Handling’

Certainly! Below is a structured report on “Plastics: Management and Handling” that includes highlights, results, acknowledgements, and conclusions.

Report on Plastics: Management and Handling**

**Introduction**

Plastics have become ubiquitous in modern life due to their versatility and durability. However, the management and handling of plastics, especially in waste form, present significant environmental challenges. This report examines current practices in plastic management, evaluates their effectiveness, and provides recommendations for improvement.

**Highlights**

  1. **Current Plastic Waste Statistics**:

   – Over 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually worldwide.

   – Approximately 50% of plastic produced is for single-use items, contributing significantly to waste.

  1. **Plastic Recycling Rates**:

   – Global plastic recycling rates remain low, with only about 9% of plastic waste being recycled into new products.

  1. **Environmental Impact**:

   – Plastic pollution adversely affects marine and terrestrial ecosystems, with microplastics being a persistent concern.

  1. **Innovative Management Strategies**:

   – Advances in biodegradable plastics and chemical recycling methods show promise in mitigating plastic waste issues.

**Results**

  1. **Effectiveness of Current Waste Management Systems**:

   – **Recycling**: Standard recycling systems are limited by contamination and the complexity of sorting different plastic types. Improvements in sorting technologies and public education are crucial.

   – **Landfilling**: Still a prevalent method, but it contributes to long-term environmental problems due to the slow degradation of plastics.

    **Public Awareness and Behavior**:

   – Increased awareness and behavioral changes in the public, such as reducing single-use plastics and improving recycling habits, have been observed but need reinforcement through policy and education

*Plastic Pollution Coalition**: For insights into the environmental impacts of plastic waste.

*Recycling Technology Companies**: For sharing information on the latest advancements in plastic recycling technologies.

– **Community Volunteers**:

Effective management and handling of plastics are critical to addressing the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste. While current systems for recycling and disposal have their limitations, innovative approaches such as biodegradable plastics and advanced recycling technologies offer hope for improvement. Public awareness and behavior play a crucial role in enhancing these systems, but continued efforts from governments, industries, and communities are necessary to develop sustainable solutions.

*Recommendations*:

  1. *Enhance Recycling Infrastructure**: Invest in better sorting and processing technologies to increase recycling rates.
  2. *Support Research**: Encourage further research into alternative materials and advanced recycling methods.
  3. *Promote Education**: Expand public education on plastic waste management and encourage behavioral changes.
  4. *Implement Policies**: Advocate for stricter regulations on plastic production and waste management practices.
